The subject, and what is assessed
AQA A-Level Biology (specification 7402) is assessed by three written papers taken at the end of the two-year course, each lasting 2 hours.
Paper 1 covers topics 1 to 4 and Paper 2 covers topics 5 to 8, both carrying 91 marks.
Paper 3 carries 78 marks and can draw on any of the eight topics, with structured questions on practical techniques, a critical analysis of experimental data, and one essay from a choice of two.
Practical skills are assessed across all three papers and separately through the practical endorsement.

Memorisation, then application
Marks are given for applying content to the question that has been set, which cannot happen while the content is still being looked up. Step 1 shows what is actually held.
Step 2 puts the correct wording in front of you while the gap is still fresh. Step 3 repeats the cold test, and the difference between the first and third attempt is the part that has moved.
