Edexcel A-Level Physics: questions and answers
Specification 9PH0. Two sets, because students and parents ask different things.
For students
Which topics are on which paper?
Paper 1 examines Working as a Physicist, mechanics, electric circuits, further mechanics, electric and magnetic fields, and nuclear and particle physics. Paper 2 examines Working as a Physicist, materials, waves and the particle nature of light, thermodynamics, space, nuclear radiation, gravitational fields and oscillations. Paper 3 can draw on any topic. The full breakdown is here.
Do I need to memorise the equations?
Some of them. Pearson supplies a formulae booklet in the exam, but it does not carry everything, and an equation you have to look up costs time you do not have. The guide asks for the equations, what each symbol means, and the conditions under which each applies, which is the part the booklet never gives you.
Is the Practical Endorsement in it?
No. It is teacher assessed across the course and reported separately as a pass. The core practicals are also examined on all three written papers, and that content is in the guide inside the topics it belongs to.
What about the maths?
Examined throughout rather than as a separate paper, and in the guide where it belongs: logarithms in radioactive decay and capacitor discharge, gradients and areas under graphs, radians in circular motion and oscillations, small angle approximations, and the handling of uncertainty and significant figures.
Paper 3 is synoptic. Does the guide help?
Yes. It draws on all thirteen topics and joins content that was taught apart, which is a recall problem before it is a technique problem. The guide is the whole course in one file, so a synoptic round is a pass over every topic rather than a hunt through two years of notes.
How long does one session take?
About twenty minutes for one subtopic, all three steps. Topics run from 62 to 288 questions, so work by subtopic.
Can I do it in my head instead of writing?
Write. Physics definitions are marked on precision, and step 2 is where the difference between your version and the printed one becomes visible. The method page sets out the evidence.
Do I still need past papers?
Yes. Past papers train the multi-step calculation under time, the unfamiliar context and the six-mark answer. Pearson publishes them free.
For parents
What is this, in plain terms?
A PDF of 1,616 exam-style questions covering the whole of Edexcel A-Level Physics, with the answers printed after each topic.
My child says physics is about understanding, not memorising.
Both are true and they are not in competition. A student who cannot state a law precisely, or who has to derive a relationship they should know, loses the marks and the time. The understanding is taught in lessons; this makes it retrievable in a hall with a clock running.
How do I check it is the right course?
The specification code is on the exam timetable. Edexcel A-Level Physics is 9PH0.
How do I know if it is being used properly?
There should be handwritten answers on paper and three passes over the same questions, and two scores per session to compare.
How much is it compared with a textbook?
£8.00 for the whole specification. An endorsed Edexcel A-Level Physics textbook is usually £30 to £40 and covers one of the two years.
How much time does the whole course take?
158 subtopics at roughly twenty minutes each is about 53 hours for a full first pass, spread across two years.
My child has fallen behind. Where should they start?
With Topic 1, Working as a Physicist, then mechanics. Both are examined on Paper 1 and Paper 3, and the rest of the course assumes them.
