Specification H431. Two sets, because students and parents ask different things.
For students
Am I on H431 or H436?
This guide is H431, which is being withdrawn. Its final assessment is summer 2027.
Students starting from September 2026 are on the replacement, H436, which is first assessed in 2028. If you started before September 2026 you are on H431 and this is your guide. If you started in or after September 2026 you need the H436 guide.

Which topics are on which paper?
All of them, on all three. OCR states that the whole specification can be assessed on each component. The papers differ by the business context the questions are set in rather than by content.
Are the calculations covered?
Yes. Break-even and margin of safety, cash flow forecasts, profitability and liquidity ratios, gearing, investment appraisal including payback, ARR and NPV, capacity utilisation, labour turnover and productivity, and index numbers.
How do I revise for a paper where anything can come up?
By subtopic, across the year, with returns. There is no way to predict which of the seven topics a paper will lean on, so the only workable approach is to have all of them retrievable rather than to revise selectively before each one.
How long does one session take?
About twenty minutes for one subtopic, all three steps. Business Objectives and Strategy is 497 questions, so work by subtopic.
Can I do it in my head instead of writing?
Write. Business marks turn on precise definitions and on working shown for calculations. The method page sets out the evidence.
Do I still need past papers?
Yes. The method puts the content into memory. Past papers train applying it to an unseen business and the extended evaluative responses. OCR publishes them free.
What do I actually receive?
A PDF, emailed on purchase. The questions for a topic print together and the answers follow directly after them.

What is this, in plain terms?
A PDF of 2,384 exam-style questions covering the whole of OCR A-Level Business H431, with the answers printed after each topic.
Is this the right specification? I have seen H436 mentioned.
OCR is replacing H431 with H436. H431 has its final assessment in summer 2027. Students who started from September 2026 are on H436, first assessed in 2028.

How do I know if it is being used properly?
There should be handwritten answers on paper and three passes over the same questions, and two scores per session to compare.
My child says they revise a topic before each paper.
That does not work on this specification. OCR assesses the whole specification on each of the three papers, so selective revision before a paper leaves gaps that the next question can land on.
How much is it compared with a textbook?
£8.00 for the whole specification. An endorsed A-Level Business textbook is usually £30 to £40.
How much time does the whole course take?
161 subtopics at roughly twenty minutes each is about 54 hours for a full first pass, spread across two years.
What else does my child need?
Past papers, which OCR publishes free, a calculator, and their own notes for anything not yet taught.
