Edexcel GCSE Physical Education: questions and answers
Specification 1PE0. Two sets, because students and parents ask different things.
For students
Which topics are on which component?
Component 1 is applied anatomy and physiology, movement analysis, physical training and use of data. Component 2 is health, fitness and wellbeing, sport psychology, socio-cultural influences and use of data again. The full breakdown is here.
Is the practical covered?
No. Your performance in three activities and your Personal Exercise Programme are marked by your school and moderated by Pearson. They are 40 per cent between them.
What is in the guide is the theory examined on the two written components, which is 60 per cent.
Do I need to name muscles and bones?
Yes, specifically. The skeleton, the major muscles, the joint types and the movements they allow are all asked by name, along with the antagonistic pairs and the planes and axes.
How much maths is there?
A use of data section on both components: means, percentages, reading graphs and tables, and drawing a conclusion from a data set. It is arithmetic rather than anything harder.
How long does one session take?
About twenty minutes for one subtopic, all three steps. Topics run from 33 to 179 questions.
Can I do it in my head instead of writing?
Write. The nine-mark answers want named structures, named principles and applied examples, and step 2 is where the wording is corrected. The method page sets out the evidence.
When should I start?
Any point in Year 10 or Year 11. Both components are sat at the end of Year 11.
Do I still need past papers?
Yes. Past papers train the extended answers and the data questions. Pearson publishes them free.
For parents
What is this, in plain terms?
A PDF of 678 exam-style questions covering the written content of Edexcel GCSE Physical Education, with the answers printed after each topic.
My child is a strong athlete but the theory marks are low.
That is common. The practical and the Personal Exercise Programme are 40 per cent; the two written components are 60 per cent and test anatomy, physiology, psychology and sociology.
How do I check it is the right course?
The specification code is on the exam timetable. Edexcel GCSE Physical Education is 1PE0.
How do I know if it is being used properly?
There should be handwritten answers on paper and three passes over the same questions, and two scores per session to compare.
How much is it compared with a textbook?
£7.00 for the whole specification. A GCSE PE textbook is usually £20 to £30.
How much time does it take?
42 subtopics at roughly twenty minutes each is about 14 hours for a full first pass.
What else does my child need?
Past papers, free from Pearson, and their own notes.
