AQA A-Level Law: questions and answers
Specification 7162. Two sets, because students and parents ask different things.
For students
Do I do contract or human rights?
One of the two, on Paper 3, chosen by your school. Contract is six topics: rules and theory, formation, terms, vitiating factors, discharge and remedies. Human rights is six: rules and theory, international and UK law, the Convention articles, restrictions and enforcement, reform, and human rights in English law.
Both are in the guide. Work yours and skip the other.
Why is the same English legal system content on every paper?
Because AQA examines it that way. Each of the three papers carries 25 marks on the nature of law and the English legal system, so those twelve topics are worth revising once and drawing on three times.
Are the cases in it?
Yes. Cases are asked by name with the facts, the point they decide and the authority they stand for, because a case cited without its principle earns nothing.
What is the nature of law about?
Law and morality, law and justice, law and society, and the theories behind them, plus the balance between the individual and the state. It is 243 questions across 17 subtopics and it feeds the extended writing on every paper.
How long does one session take?
About twenty minutes for one subtopic, all three steps. Topics run from 18 to 243 questions, so work by subtopic.
Can I do it in my head instead of writing?
Write. Law is marked on exact statements of the elements of an offence and accurate citation, and step 2 is where a loose version gets replaced. The method page sets out the evidence.
When should I start?
7162 is linear, so all three papers are sat at the end of Year 13. The English legal system content is taught first and examined on all three papers, so it repays starting in Year 12.
Do I still need past papers?
Yes. Past papers train the scenario question, the application of a rule to unfamiliar facts and the extended evaluation. AQA publishes them free.

My child understands the law but cannot cite the cases.
That is the gap this closes. Law is marked on the authority, not the impression. The guide asks for the case by name, its facts and the principle it establishes.
How do I check it is the right course?
The specification code is on the exam timetable. AQA A-Level Law is 7162.
How do I know if it is being used properly?
There should be handwritten answers on paper and three passes over the same questions, and two scores per session to compare.
How much is it compared with a textbook?
£7.00 for the whole specification including both options. An A-Level Law textbook is usually £30 to £40.
How much time does the whole course take?
169 subtopics at roughly twenty minutes each is about 56 hours for everything, and closer to 45 once the unused Paper 3 option is skipped.
