Specification H436. Two sets, because students and parents ask different things.
For students
Am I on H436 or H431?
This guide is H436, the new specification, first taught from September 2026 and first assessed in 2028.
If you started your course before September 2026 you are on the outgoing H431, whose final assessment is summer 2027, and you need the H431 guide instead.
Your exam timetable carries the code.
Which topics are on which paper?
Component 01 is Business Activity, Marketing and People. Component 02 is Operations, Finance and External Influences. Component 03 is Strategy, Risk and Managing Change.
Component 03 also ends with a synoptic question that can draw on the other two, so the earlier content stays live. The topic list shows the split.
What changed from H431?
The main change for revision is the content split. On H431 the whole specification was assessed on all three papers. On H436 each paper has its own content, with a synoptic question at the end of Component 03.
Are the calculations covered?
Yes. Break-even and margin of safety, cash flow forecasts, profitability and liquidity ratios, gearing, investment appraisal including payback, ARR and NPV, capacity utilisation, labour turnover and productivity, and index numbers.
How long does one session take?
About twenty minutes for one subtopic, all three steps. Strategy, Risk and Managing Change is 440 questions and Marketing 428, so work by subtopic.
Can I do it in my head instead of writing?
Write. Business marks turn on precise definitions and on working shown for calculations. The method page sets out the evidence.
When should I start?
H436 is linear and first assessed in 2028. Component 01 content is taught first, so start there and run returns while Component 02 is being taught.
Do I still need past papers?
Yes, and there is a wrinkle worth knowing. H436 is new, so past papers are limited at first. OCR publishes specimen papers, and H431 papers remain useful practice for the topics the two specifications share.

Which specification is my child on?
H436 is the new one, first taught from September 2026 and first assessed in 2028. H431 is the outgoing one, with its final assessment in summer 2027.

There are fewer past papers for a new specification.
That is true for the first couple of years, and it raises the value of recall practice. OCR publishes specimen papers, and the papers from the outgoing H431 remain useful for the content the two share.
How do I know if it is being used properly?
There should be handwritten answers on paper and three passes over the same questions, and two scores per session to compare.
How much is it compared with a textbook?
£8.00 for the whole specification. An endorsed A-Level Business textbook is usually £30 to £40.
How much time does the whole course take?
164 subtopics at roughly twenty minutes each is about 55 hours for a full first pass, spread across two years.
What else does my child need?
Specimen and past papers from OCR, a calculator, and their own notes for anything not yet taught.
